Teacher Certification/Credentialing in the District of Columbia

To apply for a license to teach in the District of Columbia Public Schools, candidates must complete an application, submit a $30 money order, and turn in official transcripts from all universities they have attended to the Office of Academic Credentialing and Accreditation on the 6th floor of the central administration building at:

Applicants can apply for the following licenses:

 
Standard License

To obtain a Standard Five-Year Teaching License in Washington, DC, an applicant can choose one of two options:

  • Complete an Approved Teacher Education Program – Applicants who graduate from an approved teacher education program and complete the PRAXIS I & II testing series are eligible for a standard license. (PRAXIS II testing requirements can sometimes be filled through completion of a subject area major Please see the Office of Academic Credentialing and Accreditation for detailed PRAXIS information.)
  • Interstate Reciprocity – The District of Columbia has reciprocity with the following states: Alabama, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Department of Defense Schools, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Mississippi, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Vermont, Virginia, Washington, West Virginia and Wyoming.

An applicant who holds a valid, standard (or standard equivalent) teaching license or certificate from one of the contract states listed above and who has at least three years of teaching experience within the last seven calendar years in that contract state is eligible for a standard license. If the license holder does not have the requisite experience, he or she would qualify for a provisional license. Upon completion of an approved teacher program the applicant would qualify for a standard license.
The fee for a standard license is $30 payable by money order.
 
Provisional License

The District also offers a three-year nonrenewable provisional license to qualified applicants. Award of the provisional license is contingent on an offer of employment from DCPS. In order to gain employment in DCPS with a provisional license an applicant must:

  • Possess a bachelor’s degree
  • Be enrolled in or have completed an approved teacher education program
  • Take and pass the PRAXIS I Pre-Professional Skills Test and the PRAXIS II subject area test in the area within which you want to teach

Upon completion of the Office of Academic Credentialing and Accreditation Application for Certification, submission of a one-time $30 fee and official transcripts, and confirmation of compliance with the requirements listed above, the applicant is eligible for the license. The license is good for up to three years during which time the applicant is expected to fulfill the requirements for standard certification/licensing.
